Jennifer Archer is a YA author and screenwriter based in Toronto, Ontario, and winner of the 2022 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting. Her debut novel, Into The Deep Blue is coming out in 2025.

Jennifer writes stories rooted in reality with just a hint of magic because what’s life without a little magic? Her stories are always full of adventure, heartache, and hope.

When she’s not writing, she’s hiding behind a book, re-watching Pride and Prejudice, or trying to find peace in nature (really trying).

  1. I’m a Cancer sun, Virgo rising which makes me a highly organized, task-oriented hermit—great for writing.

  2. One day my university roommate made a cake. When I asked her why, she said, ‘Because I want cake.’ There was no turning back after that. But my secret cake sin is that I don’t love the icing and take most of it off… shhh.

  3. After I read The Fault In Our Stars, I sobbed through an entire family dinner. The dinner was spaghetti. It was a messy combination

  4. Season ranking: Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer. I love Halloween, and decorate way too early, but honestly ghosts exist year round in my writing room.

  5. My grandmother is Russian. Her father was a Baron. My grandfather was Polish, from a farming family. Their love story is epic and sweeping and feels a bit like my gravity. (Maybe one day I’ll write about it.) I’m so lucky to have spent much of my youth with them.

  • Driving, listening to music, paying attention to people and the world around me. I latch on to a sight, a person, or a headline that captures my interest and build a story around it.

  • A bit of both. It’s always wiser to plot, but I’m the worst at taking my own advice. When you pants, there’s often a lot more heavy lifting in the editing process.

  • There are SO many, but here are a few i love: A.S. King, Derek Milman, Lev AC Rosen, Kelly Devos, David Levithan, Andrew Smith, Nicola Yoon, V.E. Schwab, John Green, Hannah Moskowitz, Heather Demetrios

  • Read critically. Really think about what worked or didn’t in stories or movies and why. Scriptshadow was a great resource for me, even if you don’t write scripts. Find another writer to swap a few chapters with. If you manage to sit down and write, you’re already ahead of the game.

  • Blue is very much a standalone, but of course I couldn't stop thinking about what happens next for Fiona and Nick, so the threads of plot for a sequel exist. You never know!
